Media Converter

What is Media Converter?

A media converter is a networking device that converts one type of media signal (e.g., copper or fiber-optic cabling) to another type of media signal.

It is used to extend the reach of a network beyond its original physical limitations, allowing different types of network devices to communicate with each other over different media types. Media converters can be used to connect devices such as switches, routers, servers, and workstations that have different media interfaces, such as Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, or fiber-optic interfaces. They can also be used to connect different types of cabling, such as twisted pair or coaxial cable, to fiber-optic cabling. Media converters are available in a variety of form factors, such as standalone units or rack-mounted modules. They can be managed or unmanaged, depending on the level of control and monitoring required. They are typically used in enterprise networks, data centers, and other large-scale networking applications.
